Breeding a Litter: The Complete Book of Prenatal and Postnatal Care is the most up-to-date and inclusive guide to breeding, whelping and placing puppies. There is a focus on making the most of the “breeding experience” in order to produce puppies who are physically and emotionally sound and go on to enjoy life and enrich the lives of the humans around them. This book contains the all-important basic knowledge necessary to serve as a foundation for the reality of firsthand experience. A clear and commonsense format shows everyone who is thinking about breeding a litter how to create the best possible environment for dogs, puppies and owners alike.
Beyond the basics, author Beth J. Finder Harris gives detailed information on selecting breeding stock, neonatal care, puppy development, social conditioning, and also fully addresses the aspects of breeders’ responsibilities, contracts and puppy care instructions.

If your dog gets Pregnant, read this book
Breeding A LitterIf you ever plan on breeding a litter or even if you have one by mistake, this book has some valuable information.I breed toy poodles and have found this book very useful. Along with advice from a good veterinarian, some background information on genetics, and a solid understanding of the AKC breed standards and you should be ready to go.It’s not easy and it may take a lot of work, and there is definitely no money in it, but if you’re truly trying to Improve the breed it can be a lot of fun.Highly recommended for anyone who breeds a litter.Gunner November, 2007

As a breeder of Labs and always concerned with the immediate health of my dam and newborns, this is one of the most informative and deeply explanatory books I have ever read. This copy is actually for a friend that recently experienced his first litter of puppies with his Shepherds and I feel he will find it equally helpful. This is a must read for anyone wanting to learn HOW to breed a litter before they undertake a huge responsibility.

Great info but very dated
Tons of great information all in one place. Super helpful for this first time home breeder. But very dated. Checking to make sure your phone cord can reach the whelping area is especially hilarious. Also the author is at times an insufferable snob about pedigrees and show dogs. Most of us simply don’t care.

All inclusive
All inclusive book on breeding, pregnancy, whelping, care of new puppies, and home placement. Some stuff a little out of date now, particularly the part about advertising – nothing internet related mentioned of course due to copyright date of book. But information is very useful, and there is even a first aid reference in the back. Definitely something a breeder would value on their shelf.

Falling apart as I flip through the pages
First day I got it and started reading 4 pages gently pulled free of the binding. Must be cheaply constructed in some way!?! The more I read the more pages fall out!

much important information
I will be re-reading this book many times. This will be my “Bible” for delivery. Very good and helpful information. This book was recommended to me from the person who is my mentor. She has a copy that is very worn. She wouldn’t allow me to borrow hers. She said, “you need to buy a copy of this”.

Not enough info!
This book was helpful, but I didn’t feel like it went into detail enough on problems that a bitch might have while whelping, and what the trouble signs are to look for.

I am about to embark on breeding from our Golden Retriever bitch for the first time so I am learning as much as possible. This is the second book I have bought. On first glance it looks a bit dull as it doesn’t have the colour photos that the other book has (The Complete Book of Dog Breeding by Dan Rice). This one is hardback with black and white photos and lighthearted cartoons. There seems to be more information in this book, particularly about the actual birth process. I have been comparing what the different authors say and now feel quite confident as we approach mating time. Both books are by American authors so there are many references to the American Kennel Club and stuff about registering puppies will be different, but overall I am very pleased with the book and would recommend it.

This is very informative. However there are far too many words that are unheard, that it is very hard to read and understand. I’m not uneducated. I have three degrees, including a Masters. It probably doesn’t help because it is American. I’ve given up on this book now as I’m wasting my time.
